author, writer, authority and authorize
An author writes books; a writer writes anything, including articles and scripts. Authority (power or an expert) and authorize (give official permission) come from the same Latin root (auctor, originator) but have moved away in meaning. Authoress for a woman is old-fashioned; author is used for both sexes.
