§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

end + (up) + gerund / adjective

'End up' shows the final, often unplanned result of a process. It is followed by an -ing form, an adjective or a phrase of place.

'End up' किसी प्रक्रिया के अंतिम, प्रायः अनियोजित परिणाम को दर्शाता है; इसके बाद gerund, adjective या स्थान का phrase आता है।

  • We missed the bus and ended up walking home.
  • He ended up in a small town in Bihar.

at the end of / in the end

'At the end of' needs a noun that follows it (the end of the month). 'In the end' stands alone and means 'finally, after all'.

'At the end of' के बाद संज्ञा आती है (महीने के अंत में); 'in the end' अकेले आता है और इसका अर्थ है 'अंततः'।

  • Salaries are paid at the end of the month.
  • In the end, Radhika chose the government job.

end in + noun / end with + noun

'End in' states the final result (end in failure, end in a draw). 'End with' states the last part (the speech ended with a poem).

'End in' अंतिम परिणाम बताता है (failure, draw); 'end with' अंतिम भाग या चीज़ बताता है।

  • The match ended in a draw.
  • The ceremony ended with the national anthem.

put an end to / bring to an end

Both mean to make something stop. 'Put an end to' is often used for stopping something bad.

दोनों का अर्थ किसी चीज़ को समाप्त करना है; 'put an end to' प्रायः किसी बुरी बात को रोकने के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है।

  • The new law put an end to child labour in the factory.

!Common mistakes 3

✗ At the end I decided to stay in Pune.

✓ In the end I decided to stay in Pune.

'In the end' means finally. 'At the end' needs 'of' and a noun after it.

'In the end' का अर्थ 'अंततः' है; 'at the end' के बाद 'of' और कोई संज्ञा आनी चाहिए।

✗ The meeting ended with a failure.

✓ The meeting ended in failure.

To state the result of an event, use 'end in' and no article before the abstract noun.

किसी घटना का परिणाम बताने के लिए 'end in' का प्रयोग होता है और abstract noun से पहले article नहीं लगता।

✗ Ending the exam, the bell rang.

✓ As the exam ended, the bell rang.

A participle clause must have the same subject as the main clause. A bell cannot end an exam, so the sentence needs a proper clause.

Participle clause का कर्ता मुख्य वाक्य के कर्ता के समान होना चाहिए। घंटी परीक्षा समाप्त नहीं कर सकती, इसलिए पूरा clause लिखना होगा।
