§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

fondness for + noun / gerund

The correct preposition after fondness is for. It names the thing a person likes or the habit they enjoy.

'Fondness' के बाद सही preposition 'for' है; यह उस वस्तु या आदत का नाम बताता है जो व्यक्ति को पसंद हो।

  • Radhika has a great fondness for classical music.
  • His fondness for eating sweets worried his doctor.

fondness of + noun (affection)

Fondness of can be used before an object noun, but fondness for is far more common.

'Fondness of' object noun से पहले आ सकता है, पर 'fondness for' कहीं अधिक प्रचलित है।

  • The fondness of old friends is a rare gift.

fondness + towards / in

Use 'for' for a thing and 'towards' for a person or group in formal writing.

औपचारिक लेखन में वस्तु के लिए 'for' और व्यक्ति या समूह के लिए 'towards' का प्रयोग होता है।

  • She showed great fondness towards her students.

uncountable use

Fondness is mostly uncountable, so it rarely has a plural or a number before it.

'Fondness' प्रायः अगणनीय है, इसलिए इसका plural या संख्या के साथ प्रयोग कम होता है।

§Grammar and usage

A fondness for something or somebody (not 'fondness of').

A fondness for something या somebody सही है ('fondness of' गलत है)।

The adjective takes a different preposition, so we say 'fond of', as in 'She is fond of music'.

Adjective के साथ अलग preposition आता है, इसलिए 'fond of' कहते हैं, जैसे 'She is fond of music'।
