go to + place / go + adverb

  • He went abroad last month.

go + -ing (activity)

Go plus the -ing form is used for sports and leisure activities.

  • They go trekking in the hills.

go + adjective (change)

!Common mistakes 3

✗ He went to home yesterday.

✓ He went home yesterday.

Home is an adverb here, and Hindi 'ghar ko' leads students to add to.

✗ I have went to Delhi twice.

✓ I have been to Delhi twice.

After have, the participle is needed, not the simple past; for a visit that is finished, been is used.

✗ She goes to shopping on Sundays.

✓ She goes shopping on Sundays.

With activities, go is followed directly by the -ing form; adding to is a Hindi-influenced error.
