§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

verb + me (object pronoun)

Me is the object form of I. Use it after a verb: she saw me, he told me.

Me, I का object रूप है। Verb के बाद इसका प्रयोग होता है: she saw me, he told me।

  • Radhika called me last night.
  • Please give me the notes.

preposition + me

After any preposition, use me, not I: between you and me, for me, with me.

किसी भी preposition के बाद I नहीं, me आता है: between you and me, for me, with me।

  • This gift is for me.
  • Between you and me, I did not like the film.

It's me / Me too / Me neither

In everyday speech, me stands alone as a reply: It's me, Me too, Who, me? Formal writing prefers It is I, but this is rare.

रोज़मर्रा की बोलचाल में 'me' अकेला उत्तर बनता है: It's me, Me too, Who, me? औपचारिक लेखन में 'It is I' आता है, पर यह कम प्रचलित है।

  • Who is at the door? It's me.
  • I am tired. Me too.

me + -ing / my + -ing

Before a gerund, formal writing prefers my (my coming late) while everyday speech uses me (me coming late).

Gerund के पहले औपचारिक लेखन में my (my coming late) पसंद किया जाता है, जबकि बोलचाल में me (me coming late) चलता है।

  • He objected to my leaving early.
  • She did not mind me borrowing her pen.

§Grammar and usage

Me is the object form of I, used after verbs and prepositions ('He helped me'; 'between you and me'; 'for Radhika and me', not 'for Radhika and I'); in informal English, 'It's me' is normal, while 'It is I' is very formal; 'than me' is informal ('taller than me') and 'than I am' is formal.

यह बहुत पूछा जाता है: me, I का object रूप है, verbs और prepositions के बाद प्रयुक्त ('He helped me'; 'between you and me'; 'for Radhika and me', 'for Radhika and I' नहीं); अनौपचारिक English में 'It's me' सामान्य है, जबकि 'It is I' बहुत औपचारिक है; 'than me' अनौपचारिक ('taller than me') और 'than I am' औपचारिक है।

Tip: remove the other person to check ('He invited Radhika and me' becomes 'He invited me').

युक्ति: जाँचने के लिए दूसरे व्यक्ति को हटाएँ ('He invited Radhika and me' बनता है 'He invited me')।
