Onto सतह की ओर गति दिखाता है ('He climbed onto the roof'), जबकि on स्थिति ('He is on the roof'); आधुनिक English में onto प्रायः एक शब्द में लिखा जाता है, पर जब on phrasal verb का भाग हो तो 'on to' ('Let's move on to the next topic')।
