§Structures (grammar patterns) 4
surgery (uncountable) = operations in general
In the sense of the medical work itself, surgery is uncountable: it takes no article and no plural. The same word in this sense never becomes 'surgeries' when you mean the subject or the practice.
चिकित्सा के विषय या कार्य के अर्थ में 'surgery' uncountable है; इसके साथ article नहीं लगता और इसका plural नहीं बनता।
- Radhika's uncle is a specialist in heart surgery.
- Surgery is often the last option for this illness.
surgery (countable) = one operation (BrE: an operation)
For one particular operation, say an operation or, with a number, several operations. Surgeries as a countable noun is mostly heard in the sense of doctors' consulting rooms in British English.
किसी एक विशेष ऑपरेशन के लिए 'operation' कहना अधिक स्वाभाविक है; countable 'surgeries' ब्रिटिश English में प्रायः डॉक्टर के परामर्श-कक्षों के अर्थ में आता है।
- The doctor performed three operations in one morning.
- Two surgeries in our town stay open until nine at night.
have / undergo surgery (on sth) / for sth
Patients have or undergo surgery; the doctor performs it. Use on for the body part and for for the condition.
रोगी surgery 'have' या 'undergo' करता है, डॉक्टर उसे 'perform' करता है। अंग के लिए 'on' और रोग के लिए 'for' आता है।
- My grandfather had surgery on his knee last winter.
- She underwent surgery for appendicitis.
surgery + noun (as a modifier)

!Common mistakes 3
✗ My father has done a surgery on his eye.
✓ My father has had surgery on his eye.
The patient has or undergoes surgery; only the surgeon does or performs it. Surgery in this sense also takes no article.
रोगी surgery 'have' या 'undergo' करता है, 'do' नहीं; केवल सर्जन उसे करता है। इस अर्थ में 'surgery' के साथ article भी नहीं लगता।
✗ The doctor operated my mother yesterday.
✓ The doctor operated on my mother yesterday.
Operate is an intransitive verb here and needs the preposition on before the patient.
यहाँ 'operate' अकर्मक क्रिया है, इसलिए रोगी से पहले preposition 'on' आवश्यक है।
✗ He is under the surgery since Monday.
✓ He has been in hospital since Monday after his surgery.
The phrase 'under surgery' is not standard; say that someone is having or has had surgery, and use the present perfect with since.
'Under the surgery' मानक English नहीं है; 'since' के साथ present perfect का प्रयोग होता है और surgery को 'have' के साथ बोला जाता है।
