§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

be able to + base verb

Use be able to with the base form of a verb to say that someone has the skill or the chance to do something; it never takes of or -ing.

किसी में कुछ करने की योग्यता या अवसर बताने के लिए be able to के बाद verb का base form आता है; इसके साथ 'of' या '-ing' नहीं लगता।

  • Radhika is able to solve algebra problems quickly.
  • Will you be able to join us tomorrow?

able vs can / could

Can has no future or perfect form, so be able to fills the gap: will be able to, has been able to.

'Can' का future या perfect रूप नहीं होता, इसलिए वहाँ be able to आता है: will be able to, has been able to।

  • He will be able to drive after the test.
  • I have not been able to reach her all day.

was able to vs could (one occasion)

For one successful action in the past, use was able to; could is for general ability in the past.

भूतकाल में एक विशेष सफल कार्य के लिए 'was able to' आता है; 'could' भूतकाल की सामान्य योग्यता के लिए है।

  • She was able to finish the paper in time.
  • As a child, he could swim well.

able (adjective) + noun: an able student / teacher

Before a noun, able means skilful or clever; the comparative is abler or more able, and the superlative ablest or most able.

Noun से पहले 'able' का अर्थ कुशल या योग्य है; comparative 'abler' या 'more able' और superlative 'ablest' या 'most able' होता है।

  • She is an able administrator.
  • He is the ablest player in the team.

unable + to-infinitive

The negative can be not able to or the single word unable to; unable is more formal.

निषेध 'not able to' या एक शब्द 'unable to' से बन सकता है; 'unable' अधिक औपचारिक है।

  • The witness was unable to identify the thief.
  • I am not able to attend the meeting.
