§Structures (grammar patterns) 5
any + plural / uncountable noun (negatives and questions)
Use any, not some, in negative sentences and in most questions, with plural or uncountable nouns.
Negative वाक्यों और अधिकांश प्रश्नों में plural या uncountable noun के साथ 'some' के स्थान पर 'any' आता है।
- I did not buy any vegetables today.
- Is there any milk left in the fridge?
any + singular countable noun (it does not matter which)
In positive sentences, any with a singular noun means it does not matter which one.
Positive वाक्यों में singular noun के साथ 'any' का अर्थ है 'कोई भी, फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ता कौन-सा'।
- You can pick any book from the shelf.
- Any student can borrow a book from the library.
if + any / hardly any / without any
Any appears after if, hardly and without because these words carry a negative or doubtful sense.
'If', 'hardly' और 'without' के साथ नकारात्मक या संदेह का भाव होता है, इसलिए इनके बाद 'any' आता है।
- If you have any doubts, please ask.
- There was hardly any water in the well.
any of + the / these / them
Use any of before a determiner or pronoun when choosing from a group of three or more.
तीन या अधिक के समूह में से चुनने पर determiner या pronoun से पहले 'any of' आता है।
- Have any of you seen my umbrella?
- I don't like any of these shirts.
any + comparative
Any can come before a comparative to mean at all in questions and negatives.
प्रश्नों और नकारात्मक वाक्यों में comparative से पहले 'any' का अर्थ 'ज़रा भी' होता है।
