Assure means to tell somebody confidently that something is true, to remove their doubt: 'I assure you he is honest' (you assure a person). Ensure means to make certain that something happens: 'Ensure that the door is locked.' Insure means to buy insurance against loss: 'insure the car against theft'. American English often uses insure for ensure, but British English keeps them apart.
