§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

behave + adverb / like + noun

Behave is intransitive and is followed by an adverb or a phrase of manner, not an adjective: behave well, behave badly, behave like a child.

'Behave' अकर्मक है और इसके बाद adverb या manner वाला phrase आता है, adjective नहीं: behave well, behave badly, behave like a child।

  • The students behaved well during the visit.
  • He behaves like a spoilt child.

behave + towards / to + person

Use towards or to for the person who receives the behaviour.

जिस व्यक्ति के प्रति व्यवहार हो उसके लिए towards या to आता है।

  • Teachers should behave fairly towards every pupil.
  • She always behaved kindly to the poor.

behave yourself / behave oneself

Behave yourself means to act properly. The reflexive pronoun must match the subject. Behave alone, as an order, means the same.

'Behave yourself' का अर्थ उचित व्यवहार करना है। Reflexive pronoun subject से मेल खाना चाहिए। आदेश के रूप में अकेला 'behave' भी यही अर्थ देता है।

  • Behave yourself in front of the guests.
  • The children behaved themselves all evening.

well-behaved / badly behaved (adjectives)

The adjective form is hyphenated before a noun: a well-behaved class. After a verb, use well behaved or badly behaved.

Adjective रूप noun से पहले hyphen के साथ आता है: a well-behaved class। Verb के बाद 'well behaved' या 'badly behaved' प्रयोग करें।

  • The well-behaved children were praised by the principal.
  • The dog is well behaved.

behave (of things): machines, materials, chemicals

For objects, behave means to work or react in a particular way, again with an adverb.

वस्तुओं के लिए 'behave' का अर्थ किसी विशेष तरीके से काम करना या प्रतिक्रिया देना है, इसमें भी adverb आता है।

  • Gases behave differently at high temperatures.
  • The old computer behaves strangely.
