§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

big + noun (attributive)

Use big before a noun for size, importance or seriousness. It is the everyday word; in formal writing large or major is often preferred.

संज्ञा से पहले 'big' आकार, महत्व या गंभीरता बताता है। यह रोज़मर्रा का शब्द है; formal लेखन में प्रायः large या major अधिक उपयुक्त होता है।

  • Radhika asked a big question at the end of the lecture.
  • It was a big decision for the whole family.

big + noun for an older person

In family talk, big brother or big sister means an older sibling. Do not use big to describe an older person's age in general.

परिवार की बातचीत में 'big brother' या 'big sister' का अर्थ बड़ा भाई या बड़ी बहन होता है। किसी व्यक्ति की उम्र बताने के लिए सामान्यतः 'big' का प्रयोग नहीं करते।

comparative and superlative: bigger, the biggest

Big is a one-syllable adjective, so it forms bigger and biggest by doubling the final g. Never write more big.

'Big' एक syllable का adjective है, इसलिए अंतिम g दोहराकर bigger और biggest बनता है। 'More big' कभी नहीं लिखा जाता।

  • Mumbai is bigger than Pune, but Delhi is the biggest of the three.
  • This year's festival is the biggest in our town's history.

a big + noun vs a great deal of

Big is used with countable nouns of size or importance. For amounts of uncountable things, use a great deal of or a lot of, not big.

'Big' का प्रयोग आकार या महत्व वाली countable संज्ञाओं के साथ होता है। अगणनीय वस्तुओं की मात्रा के लिए 'a great deal of' या 'a lot of' लिखें, 'big' नहीं।

  • We have a lot of homework tonight, not a big homework.
