Cheerio! (exclamation)

Cheerio is an old-fashioned, informal British word for goodbye; it stands alone as an exclamation.

  • Cheerio! See you tomorrow.
  • 'Cheerio, then,' said the old gentleman.

say cheerio (to sb)

Use say before cheerio and to before the person, as with other farewells.

  • She said cheerio to the neighbours and left.

cheerio in speech and fiction

It is rarely written in formal work; it appears in dialogue, stories and humorous British scenes.

  • The character in the novel waved and cried, 'Cheerio!'

cheerio vs goodbye / bye

Cheerio is warmer and more cheerful than goodbye, but it sounds dated today; bye is the usual modern word.

  • Say bye in an email, not cheerio, unless you are joking.

cheerio in modern use

Today cheerio is used mostly as a joke or in a deliberately old-fashioned style, so young speakers prefer bye.

  • He said 'Cheerio!' in a funny British accent.
