Empathy is the ability to understand another person's feelings by imagining yourself in their situation ('feeling with'). Sympathy is feeling sorry for somebody who is in a bad situation ('feeling for'). A doctor who once had the same illness has empathy; a friend who sends flowers shows sympathy.
