§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

ever in questions

Means 'at any time'. Used in questions, usually with the present perfect: 'Have you ever...?'

इसका अर्थ 'कभी भी' है। प्रश्नों में प्रायः present perfect के साथ: 'Have you ever...?'

  • Have you ever visited the Taj Mahal?
  • Did he ever tell you the truth?

ever in negatives and with if

In negative sentences and with 'if', 'ever' stresses 'at any time'. Do not use it with 'not' where 'never' is meant.

नकारात्मक वाक्यों और 'if' के साथ 'ever' का अर्थ 'किसी भी समय' पर बल देता है।

  • I haven't ever seen such a big crowd.
  • If you ever need help, call me.

superlative + ever

After a superlative, 'ever' means 'up to now'. Use the present perfect.

Superlative के बाद 'ever' का अर्थ 'अब तक' होता है। Present perfect प्रयुक्त होता है।

  • This is the best film I have ever seen.
  • It was the hardest paper he had ever written.

ever + comparative / ever so / ever since

'Ever more' means increasingly; 'ever since' means 'from then until now'; 'ever so' is an informal British way of saying 'very'.

'Ever more' का अर्थ बढ़ते हुए; 'ever since' का अर्थ 'तब से अब तक'; 'ever so' अनौपचारिक British में 'बहुत' है।

  • The traffic grew ever worse.
  • She has lived here ever since 2015.
  • Thank you, you are ever so kind.

wh-word + ever

'Whatever', 'whenever', 'however' and so on are single words. Written separately, 'ever' emphasises surprise in questions: 'What ever do you mean?'

'Whatever', 'whenever', 'however' आदि एक शब्द होते हैं। अलग लिखने पर प्रश्न में 'ever' आश्चर्य पर बल देता है।

  • Whatever you do, do it well.
