§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

everybody + singular verb

Though it means 'all people', 'everybody' takes a singular verb.

अर्थ 'सभी लोग' होने पर भी 'everybody' के साथ singular verb आती है।

  • Everybody was happy about the holiday.
  • Everybody knows the answer.

everybody + they / their (reference)

In modern English, 'their' and 'they' often refer back to 'everybody': 'Everybody must bring their books.'

आधुनिक English में 'everybody' के लिए 'their' और 'they' का प्रयोग आम है।

  • Everybody must bring their own books.

everybody else / everybody who

'Else' adds 'other people'; a relative clause with 'who' says which people.

'Else' अन्य लोगों के लिए जुड़ता है; 'who' वाला clause बताता है कि कौन से लोग।

  • Everybody else had gone home.
  • Everybody who attended got a certificate.

everybody vs everyone

They mean the same. 'Everybody' is a bit more casual. 'Every body' (two words) means every dead body or every human body, and is rare.

दोनों का अर्थ समान है। 'Everybody' थोड़ा अनौपचारिक है। दो शब्दों में 'every body' का अर्थ हर शरीर है, और यह दुर्लभ है।

  • Everybody in the lecture hall clapped.

everybody + negative

For 'no one', use 'nobody' or 'not everybody'. Not everybody means some do and some do not.

'कोई नहीं' के लिए 'nobody' आता है; 'not everybody' का अर्थ है कुछ हाँ, कुछ नहीं।

  • Not everybody likes spicy food.
