§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

hear + sb / sth + bare infinitive

Use the bare infinitive when you heard the whole action from start to finish. In the passive, to appears: he was heard to say.

Passive में 'to' आता है: he was heard to say.

  • I heard the bell ring twice.
  • We heard Radhika sing at the function.

hear + sb / sth + -ing

Use -ing when you heard only part of an action in progress.

  • I heard someone shouting outside.
  • She heard the rain falling on the roof.

hear of / hear about / hear from

Hear of means to know that someone or something exists. Hear about means to be told the details. Hear from means to receive a message from someone.

  • Did you hear about the exam date?
  • I heard from my brother yesterday.

hear that + clause

!Common mistakes 3

✗ I heard him to sing a song.

✓ I heard him sing a song.

After hear + object, use the bare infinitive (without to) in the active voice.

✗ I have not heard about that actor before.

✓ I have not heard of that actor before.

To say you have never known that someone exists, use hear of, not hear about.

✗ I can hear the music since morning.

✓ I have been hearing the music since morning.

With since, a present perfect form is needed; the simple present can hear is wrong.

'Since' के साथ present perfect रूप चाहिए; simple present 'can hear' गलत है।
