Huh? (did not hear or understand)

Say huh as a short informal question when you did not hear or understand something. It is rude in formal speech; use pardon or sorry.

  • Huh? What did you say?
  • Huh? I didn't get that.

..., huh? (tag at the end)

At the end of a sentence it asks for agreement or shows surprise, like isn't it.

  • Nice weather, huh?
  • So you passed the exam, huh?

Huh! (surprise or scorn)

A sharp huh can show surprise or contempt.

spoken only

Huh is used in speech and informal chat messages, not in essays.

  • Huh, that's odd.

Huh? in chat and texting

In text messages, huh is often written with extra letters or a question mark, but it still shows surprise.

  • Huh?? You are leaving today?
