I is the first person subject pronoun; it is used before a verb.

'I' उत्तम पुरुष का subject pronoun है; यह verb से पहले आता है।

  • I study in the library every evening.
  • I have finished my notes.

X and I (as subject)

When another person is named with you as the subject, write 'X and I', with the other person first.

जब subject में आप और कोई अन्य व्यक्ति हों, तब 'X and I' लिखा जाता है, दूसरे व्यक्ति का नाम पहले आता है।

  • Radhika and I are classmates.
  • My brother and I went to the match.

between X and me (not I)

After a preposition the object form 'me' is used, never 'I'.

Preposition के बाद object रूप 'me' आता है, 'I' नहीं।

  • This is between you and me.
  • The teacher gave books to Aman and me.

I + am / was / have

  • I was late yesterday.
  • I have never seen a hyena.

§Grammar and usage

I is always written as a capital letter; I is the subject form and me the object form ('Radhika and I went', not 'me and Radhika went'; 'between you and me', not 'between you and I'); in formal English the first person comes last for politeness ('you, he and I'), but for admitting a mistake I comes first ('I and my friend were wrong'); after 'than' or 'as', formal English uses I + verb ('She is taller than I am').

यह बहुत पूछा जाता है: I सदा बड़े अक्षर में लिखा जाता है; I subject रूप और me object रूप है ('Radhika and I went', 'me and Radhika went' नहीं; 'between you and me', 'between you and I' नहीं); औपचारिक English में शिष्टता के लिए प्रथम पुरुष अंत में आता है ('you, he and I'), पर गलती स्वीकारने में I पहले आता है ('I and my friend were wrong'); 'than' या 'as' के बाद औपचारिक English में I + verb ('She is taller than I am')।
