§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

new to sb / sth

To say that you are unfamiliar with something, use new to. The thing you do not know comes after to.

किसी वस्तु से अपरिचित होना बताने के लिए 'new to' का प्रयोग होता है; जिससे अपरिचय है वह to के बाद आता है।

  • Radhika is new to this city.

new at / new in

Use new at for an activity or a job, and new in for a place such as a town or a class.

किसी कार्य या नौकरी में नया होने के लिए 'new at' और नगर या कक्षा जैसे स्थान के लिए 'new in' आता है।

  • He is new at teaching.
  • We are new in this colony.

new, newer, newest

Comparison is regular, but newer is mostly used for objects and methods, while latest is preferred for news and fashions.

इसका comparison नियमित है, पर 'newer' प्रायः वस्तुओं और विधियों के लिए आता है, जबकि समाचार और फ़ैशन के लिए 'latest' पसंद किया जाता है।

  • This model is newer than the old one.

brand new / as good as new

Brand new means unused and just made. As good as new means repaired or cleaned so well that it looks unused.

'Brand new' का अर्थ बिल्कुल नया और अप्रयुक्त है; 'as good as new' का अर्थ इतनी अच्छी मरम्मत कि वस्तु नई जैसी लगे।

  • After the repair, the cycle was as good as new.

!Common mistakes 3

✗ I bought a new car yesterday which is of red colour.

✓ I bought a new red car yesterday.

Use the colour adjective directly before the noun; 'of red colour' is wordy and unnatural.

Colour adjective को सीधे संज्ञा से पहले रखें; 'of red colour' अनावश्यक रूप से लंबा और अस्वाभाविक है।

✗ He is a new to the job.

✓ He is new to the job.

After be, new is used without an article because it is a predicate adjective.

Be के बाद 'new' predicate adjective होता है, इसलिए उससे पहले article नहीं आता।

✗ What is the news in your family?

✓ What is new in your family?

News means reports about events; to ask what has changed, use what is new.

'News' का अर्थ घटनाओं की सूचना है; क्या बदला है यह पूछने के लिए 'what is new' लिखा जाता है।
