Use 'for' for what you are trying to find; the object of 'search' itself is the place.

Search takes the place or person as object: 'search the house', 'search the suspect'. Search for takes the thing being looked for: 'search for the key' (not 'search the key'). Seek is the formal verb with a direct object: 'seek the truth', 'seek help'. Research (with re-) is careful study to discover facts, not searching again. 'Soul-searching' means deep examination of your own motives.
