Several means a small number, more than two, with a positive feel: 'several friends came'. A few also means a small number, positive: 'a few friends came'. Few without 'a' is negative, meaning hardly any: 'few friends came'. Several always takes a plural noun and a plural verb: 'Several students were late' (not 'was').
