singular subject + singular verb

A singular subject takes a singular verb. In the present simple this means adding -s or -es to the verb, and 'is', 'was' or 'has' for be and have. This is the core of subject-verb agreement.

Singular subject के साथ singular verb आता है। Present simple में verb में -s या -es लगता है, और be तथा have के लिए 'is', 'was' या 'has' आता है। यह subject-verb agreement का मूल concept है।

  • The child plays in the garden every evening.
  • Each of the boys has a bat.

in the singular

Use this phrase to say which form of a noun, pronoun or verb you mean, as opposed to 'in the plural'.

किसी noun, pronoun या verb के singular रूप का उल्लेख करने के लिए 'in the singular' का प्रयोग होता है, जिसका विपरीत 'in the plural' है।

  • 'Scissors' is rarely used in the singular.
  • Put the verb in the singular after 'each'.

plural-looking but singular nouns

Subjects such as news, physics, mathematics, economics and politics end in -s but are singular and take a singular verb.

News, physics, mathematics, economics और politics जैसे शब्द -s पर समाप्त होते हैं, फिर भी singular हैं और singular verb लेते हैं।

  • The news was shocking.
  • Mathematics is Radhika's favourite subject.

singular (formal): remarkable

In formal writing, 'singular' also means unusual or outstanding. It is rare in speech but appears in comprehension passages.

औपचारिक लेखन में 'singular' का अर्थ असाधारण या उत्कृष्ट भी होता है। यह बोलचाल में कम आता है, पर comprehension passages में मिलता है।

  • She showed singular courage during the flood.
  • It was a singular honour to meet the President.
