Total as a noun is the final amount after adding. Say a total of 50 marks, or 50 marks in total. In total comes at the end of the clause.

  • A total of 120 students appeared for the test.
  • The trip cost five thousand rupees in total.

total (adjective) + noun

As an adjective, total means complete or whole and comes before a noun. It is not used after a verb in this meaning.

total (verb): total + amount / total up to

As a verb, total means to reach a final amount. The subject is the thing being added. The past forms are totalled in British English and totaled in American English.

Verb के रूप में 'total' का अर्थ अंतिम राशि तक पहुँचना है। Subject वह चीज़ होती है जिसे जोड़ा जा रहा है। British English में past form 'totalled' होती है, American English में 'totaled'।

  • Her scores in all five subjects totalled 430.
  • The damage from the flood totalled several crore rupees.

the grand total / sum total / in total vs. on the whole

Grand total is the final amount of all sub-totals. Sum total is the whole amount or result. On the whole means in general, so do not confuse it with in total.

Grand total सभी sub-totals को जोड़कर बनी अंतिम राशि है। Sum total कुल राशि या परिणाम है। 'On the whole' का अर्थ सामान्य रूप से है, इसलिए इसे 'in total' से न मिलाएँ।

  • The grand total of the bill came to nine thousand rupees.
  • On the whole, the results were good.
