ugly + noun (attributive)

Ugly before a noun describes appearance, but it can also describe sounds, behaviour or situations that are nasty. It is a strong word, so students often prefer a softer one when talking about a person.

Noun से पहले 'ugly' रूप-रंग बताता है, पर यह अप्रिय आवाज़, व्यवहार या स्थिति के लिए भी आता है। किसी व्यक्ति के लिए यह कठोर शब्द है।

  • The factory was an ugly grey building near the river.
  • There was an ugly scene outside the court.

ugly (predicative) + to look at

After a linking verb, ugly can be followed by to look at or to see, but the infinitive is optional.

Linking verb के बाद 'ugly' के साथ 'to look at' या 'to see' आ सकता है, पर यह अनिवार्य नहीं।

  • The new flyover is ugly to look at.
  • The stain made the wall look ugly.

ugly mood / turn ugly

When a crowd or a situation turns ugly, it becomes threatening and likely to end in violence.

जब भीड़ या स्थिति 'turn ugly' होती है, तो वह धमकी भरी हो जाती है और हिंसा की संभावना बन जाती है।

  • The crowd turned ugly when the match was stopped.
  • The mood in the meeting grew ugly.

comparative and superlative: uglier, ugliest

Ugly is a two-syllable adjective ending in -y, so the -y becomes -i before -er and -est; do not write more ugly in careful English.

'Ugly' दो अक्षरों का विशेषण है जो -y पर समाप्त होता है, इसलिए -er और -est से पहले -y का -i हो जाता है।

  • This is the ugliest bus stand I have seen.
  • The second design is uglier than the first.
