§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

at the age of + number / at + number

To say when something happened in life, use at the age of or simply at plus the number.

जीवन में कोई घटना कब हुई, यह बताने के लिए 'at the age of' या केवल 'at' और संख्या का प्रयोग होता है।

  • Radhika started playing chess at the age of six.
  • He retired at sixty.

be + number + years old / aged + number

To state age, use years old after be, or aged before the number; do not say 'years old age'.

आयु बताने के लिए be के बाद 'years old' या संख्या से पहले 'aged' लगाएँ; 'years old age' नहीं लिखा जाता।

  • My sister is twenty years old.
  • Children aged between five and ten can join.

for ages / ages ago

Informally, ages means a very long time, and it usually pairs with for or ago.

अनौपचारिक रूप में 'ages' का अर्थ बहुत लंबा समय है और यह प्रायः for या ago के साथ आता है।

  • I have not met her for ages.
  • We left the village ages ago.

age + verb (to grow old)

As a verb, age is intransitive when a person or thing grows old, and transitive when something makes you look older.

क्रिया के रूप में 'age' तब अकर्मक है जब कोई बूढ़ा होता है, और तब सकर्मक है जब कोई चीज़ आपको बड़ा दिखाती है।

  • Grief aged him quickly.
  • Wine ages well.

the age of + noun / the + adjective + Age

Age is also a long period of history; the name takes capital letters.

'Age' इतिहास का लंबा कालखंड भी है; उसका नाम capital letters में लिखा जाता है।

!Common mistakes 3

Use years old, or say his age is twenty; do not combine them.

'Years old' लिखें, या 'his age is twenty' कहें; दोनों को मिलाया नहीं जाता।

✗ I have not seen her since ages.

✓ I have not seen her for ages.

Since is for a point in time; ages is a length of time, so use for.

'Since' समय-बिंदु के लिए आता है; 'ages' अवधि है, इसलिए 'for' लगाएँ।

✗ She is aged of thirty.

✓ She is aged thirty.

Aged is followed directly by the number, with no preposition.

'Aged' के बाद संख्या सीधे आती है, बीच में preposition नहीं लगता।
