both ... and ... (correlative)

'Both' goes with 'and', never 'as well as' or 'or', and the two parts must have the same grammatical form.

both + negative (not both)

To deny one of the two, use 'neither' or 'not both'; 'both not' is wrong.

§Grammar and usage

Both takes a plural verb ('Both are correct'); both ... and (not 'both ... as well as': 'She is both clever and kind'); parallel structure after both ... and ('both singing and dancing', not 'both singing and to dance'); both of + pronoun ('both of us'); the negative of both is neither ('Neither of them came', not 'Both of them did not come', which is ambiguous); position: after be and auxiliaries ('They are both teachers'; 'We have both seen it').

यह बहुत पूछा जाता है: both plural verb लेता है ('Both are correct'); both ... and ('both ... as well as' नहीं: 'She is both clever and kind'); both ... and के बाद समान संरचना ('both singing and dancing', 'both singing and to dance' नहीं); both of + pronoun ('both of us'); both का नकारात्मक neither है ('Neither of them came', 'Both of them did not come' नहीं, जो अस्पष्ट है); स्थिति में be और auxiliaries के बाद ('They are both teachers'; 'We have both seen it')।
