§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

her as object pronoun

Her replaces a woman or girl when she is the object of a verb or comes after a preposition.

जब स्त्री या लड़की क्रिया की object हो या preposition के बाद आए, तब उसकी जगह 'her' आता है।

  • Radhika forgot her bag, so I gave it to her.
  • The teacher praised her.

her + noun (possessive determiner)

Her before a noun shows that something belongs to a woman or girl; it never takes -s and never changes for a plural noun.

Noun से पहले 'her' दर्शाता है कि वस्तु स्त्री या लड़की की है; उसमें -s नहीं लगता और plural noun के लिए रूप नहीं बदलता।

  • Her books are on the table.
  • She lost her way.

her vs she

Use she as subject and her as object; after than or as, a pronoun in speech is often her, in formal writing she with the verb.

Subject के रूप में 'she' और object के रूप में 'her' आता है; औपचारिक लेखन में than/as के बाद 'she' के साथ क्रिया आती है।

  • She is taller than I am.
  • Between you and her, nothing is secret.

her vs hers vs herself

Her goes before a noun, hers stands alone, and herself is used when the subject and object are the same woman.

'Her' noun से पहले आता है, 'hers' अकेला आता है और 'herself' तब आता है जब कर्ता और कर्म एक ही स्त्री हो।

  • This is her pen; that one is hers.
  • She taught herself.

§Grammar and usage

Her is both the object form ('I saw her') and the possessive determiner ('her bag'); hers is the possessive pronoun ('The bag is hers').

अक्सर पूछा जाता है: her object रूप ('I saw her') और possessive determiner ('her bag') दोनों है; hers possessive pronoun है ('The bag is hers')।

Agreement trap: the possessive agrees with the owner ('Raj and his sister'; 'Radhika and her brother'), not with the thing owned.

Agreement trap: possessive मालिक से मेल खाता है ('Raj and his sister'; 'Radhika and her brother'), वस्तु से नहीं।

Tip: never write 'her's'.

युक्ति: 'her's' कभी न लिखें।
