§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

his + noun (possessive determiner)

Before a noun, his shows that something belongs to a man or boy and never takes an apostrophe.

Noun से पहले 'his' किसी पुरुष या लड़के के अधिकार को दिखाता है और इसमें apostrophe कभी नहीं लगता।

  • Radhika's brother lost his bag.
  • He forgot his lunch at home.

his (possessive pronoun)

Without a noun, his stands alone as a pronoun: The pen is his.

Noun के बिना 'his' pronoun के रूप में अकेले आता है: The pen is his।

  • This notebook is his.
  • Your answer is better than his.

a friend of his

The double possessive a friend of his is natural and means one of his friends.

Double possessive 'a friend of his' स्वाभाविक है और इसका अर्थ 'उसके मित्रों में से एक' है।

  • A cousin of his works in the railways.
  • I met a teacher of his.

his own

His own gives emphasis: He wrote the song his own way; of his own means belonging only to him.

'His own' ज़ोर देता है: He wrote the song his own way; 'of his own' का अर्थ केवल उसका है।

  • He has a room of his own.
  • He did it in his own way.

his vs he's

His shows possession, while he's is a short form of he is or he has; the two are often confused in writing.

'His' अधिकार दिखाता है, जबकि he's, he is या he has का संक्षिप्त रूप है; लेखन में दोनों में प्रायः भ्रम होता है।

  • He's late because his bus broke down.
  • The bag on the desk is his.

§Grammar and usage

His is both a determiner ('his car') and a pronoun ('The car is his'), with no apostrophe; 'a friend of his'; the possessive agrees with the owner, not with the thing owned ('Radhika loves her father'; 'Raj loves his mother'), which is different from Hindi, where 'uska' or 'uski' depends on the thing.

अक्सर पूछा जाता है: his determiner ('his car') और pronoun ('The car is his') दोनों है, apostrophe के बिना; 'a friend of his'; possessive मालिक से मेल खाता है, वस्तु से नहीं ('Radhika loves her father'; 'Raj loves his mother'), जो हिंदी से भिन्न है, जहाँ 'उसका' या 'उसकी' वस्तु पर निर्भर करता है।
