feel / be lonely

Lonely describes how a person feels because of lacking company; after feel or be it takes no preposition.

  • Radhika felt lonely when she first moved to the hostel.
  • The old man is often lonely in the evenings.

lonely + noun (person or place)

Before a noun, lonely can describe a person who is unhappy alone, or a place where few people go.

  • She was a lonely child with few friends.
  • We drove along a lonely road at night.

lonely vs alone

Alone only says that there is no one with you, with no sadness; lonely adds the feeling of unhappiness, and alone is not used before a noun.

  • He lives alone but he is not lonely.
  • A lonely man sat on the bench.

loneliness (noun) / lonesome (US)

The noun is loneliness; lonesome is similar but is mostly American and old-fashioned.

  • Loneliness is a problem among many elderly people.
