§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

long + for sth / to-infinitive (verb)

As a verb, long means to want something very much, especially something that is far away or hard to get. It takes for, or a to-infinitive.

Verb के रूप में 'long' का अर्थ किसी दूर या दुर्लभ वस्तु की तीव्र इच्छा करना है; इसके बाद for या to-infinitive आता है।

  • The children long for the summer holidays.
  • Radhika longed to see her village again.

measurement + long

The measurement comes before long. When it works as a modifier before a noun, the measurement word stays singular and is joined with hyphens.

माप 'long' से पहले आता है; संज्ञा से पहले modifier बनने पर माप-शब्द singular रहता है और hyphen से जुड़ता है।

  • The rope is ten metres long.
  • It was a two-hour-long journey.

long before / long after / long since

As an adverb, long combines with before, after and since to stress that a great length of time separated two events.

Adverb के रूप में 'long' के साथ before, after और since आकर दो घटनाओं के बीच समय के बड़े अंतर पर बल देते हैं।

  • The train had left long before we reached the station.
  • That shop closed long ago.

no longer / not any longer

No longer is used with a positive verb, and not any longer with a negative verb. Both mean that something stopped.

'No longer' सकारात्मक क्रिया के साथ आता है और 'not any longer' नकारात्मक क्रिया के साथ; दोनों का अर्थ है कि कोई स्थिति समाप्त हो गई।

  • He no longer lives in this colony.
  • I cannot wait any longer.

After how much we need the comparative longer; otherwise ask simply how long.

'How much' के बाद comparative 'longer' आता है; अन्यथा केवल 'How long' पूछा जाता है।

✗ I am longing to meet you since morning.

✓ I have been longing to meet you since morning.

Since marks a starting point in the past, so it needs a perfect tense.

'Since' भूतकाल के आरंभ-बिंदु को दर्शाता है, इसलिए इसके साथ perfect tense आता है।

✗ He does not live here any more long.

✓ He no longer lives here.

Use no longer or not any longer; do not stack the words in this order.
