§Structures (grammar patterns) 5
see + object + bare infinitive
To watch a complete action from start to end, use the bare infinitive without to; the passive brings to back.
किसी पूरी क्रिया को शुरू से अंत तक देखने के लिए bare infinitive (बिना to के) आता है; passive में to लौट आता है।
- I saw Radhika enter the examination hall.
- She was seen to enter the hall at nine.
see + object + -ing
Use the -ing form when you saw only part of an action that was in progress.
जब आपने किसी चल रही क्रिया का केवल एक भाग देखा हो, तब -ing रूप आता है।
- I saw a boy climbing the wall.
see + wh-clause / that-clause
Meaning understand or find out; it is a stative verb, so it is not normally used in the continuous form.
समझने या पता लगाने के अर्थ में प्रयुक्त यह stative verb है, इसलिए सामान्यतः continuous रूप में नहीं आती।
- I see what you mean.
- Please see that the windows are closed.
can see (not am seeing)
For the ability to perceive with your eyes right now, use can see; the continuous is kept for meeting, dating or visiting.
इस समय आँखों से देख पाने की क्षमता के लिए 'can see' आता है; continuous रूप मिलने, मेल-जोल या दौरे के अर्थ में रखा जाता है।
- I can't see the board from the last bench.
- She is seeing a specialist about her back pain.
see + sb + about / off / out
Many combinations: see sb about means meet to discuss, see sb off means say goodbye at a station, and see sb out means guide to the door.
कई संयोजन हैं: 'see sb about' का अर्थ चर्चा के लिए मिलना, 'see sb off' स्टेशन पर विदा करना और 'see sb out' दरवाज़े तक छोड़ना है।

✗ I am not seeing the board from here.

'See' धारणा बताने वाली stative verb है, इसलिए 'can see' लिखें, continuous नहीं।
✗ I saw him to go out of the room.
✓ I saw him go out of the room.
After see + object, use the bare infinitive or -ing, not to.
'See + object' के बाद bare infinitive या -ing आता है, 'to' नहीं।
✗ I am looking forward to see you soon.
✓ I am looking forward to seeing you soon.
In look forward to, the word to is a preposition, so the verb takes -ing.
