§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

encourage sb + to-infinitive

This is the most common pattern: the person encouraged comes first, then to + verb. It means to persuade or give someone the confidence to do something.

encourage + noun / -ing form

Without a person, encourage can take a noun or an -ing form for the thing that is supported or made more likely.

  • The school encourages reading in the library.
  • The new law encourages saving among young earners.

be encouraged by / to-infinitive

The passive takes by for the cause and to + verb for the action that follows.

Passive रूप में कारण के लिए 'by' और आगे के कार्य के लिए to + verb का प्रयोग होता है।

  • The players were encouraged by the cheering crowd.
  • Villagers are encouraged to plant trees near the canal.

encourage + that-clause (avoid)

Encourage is not followed by a that-clause in this sense. Rewrite the idea with a person and to-infinitive.

इस अर्थ में 'encourage' के बाद that-clause नहीं आता। विचार को व्यक्ति और to-infinitive के साथ दोबारा लिखें।

  • My father encouraged me to continue my studies.
