might + base verb (possibility)

Use might to say that something is possible but not very likely, about the present or future. It is weaker than may.

किसी बात की संभावना कम हो तो वर्तमान या भविष्य के लिए 'might' का प्रयोग होता है। यह 'may' से कमज़ोर है।

  • It might rain this evening.
  • She might not come to the party.

might have + past participle

Use this for a past possibility, or for something that did not happen but was possible.

भूतकाल की संभावना या ऐसी बात बताने के लिए जो हो सकती थी पर हुई नहीं, 'might have + V3' का प्रयोग होता है।

  • He might have missed the bus.
  • You might have been hurt.

might in reported speech

Might is the past form of may and is used after a past reporting verb.

'Might', 'may' का भूतकालीन रूप है और past reporting verb के बाद आता है।

  • She said she might join us later.

Might I ...? / You might ...

Might is used for a very polite request or a gentle suggestion. It sounds formal.

बहुत विनम्र अनुरोध या कोमल सुझाव के लिए 'might' का प्रयोग होता है। यह formal लगता है।

Homophone: might और mite (बहुत छोटा जीव; थोड़ी मात्रा) दोनों /maɪt/ हैं।

§Grammar and usage

Might shows less certainty than may ('It might rain', a small chance); might is the past of may in reported speech ('He said, "I may come"' becomes 'He said that he might come'); might have + past participle (past possibility: 'She might have forgotten').

यह बहुत पूछा जाता है: might, may से कम निश्चितता दिखाता है ('It might rain', थोड़ी संभावना); reported speech में might, may का past है ('He said, "I may come"' बनता है 'He said that he might come'); might have + past participle (अतीत की संभावना: 'She might have forgotten')।

The adjective mighty means very strong ('the mighty Himalayas').

Adjective mighty का अर्थ बहुत शक्तिशाली है ('the mighty Himalayas')।
