pathetic has two faces
The older sense, arousing pity, is still used in literature: 'the pathetic fallacy' (giving human feelings to nature). The everyday sense is contemptuous: 'a pathetic effort'. So 'a pathetic story' may be moving or may be worthless; the context decides. The noun pathos keeps only the first sense.
