§Structures (grammar patterns) 5

as + noun (role or job)

As before a noun shows a role, job or function: it tells what someone or something is, not what it looks like.

Noun से पहले 'as' भूमिका, पेशा या कार्य दर्शाता है: यह बताता है कि कोई व्यक्ति या वस्तु क्या है, वह कैसा दिखता है यह नहीं।

  • Radhika works as a bank clerk.
  • He used a brick as a doorstop.

as + clause: time (as = while / when)

As introduces something happening at the same time, and it is often used when one action changes slowly while another continues.

'As' उस घटना को जोड़ता है जो उसी समय हो रही हो, और जब एक क्रिया धीरे-धीरे बदलती है और दूसरी चलती रहती है तब भी इसका प्रयोग होता है।

  • As I was leaving, the phone rang.
  • The crowd grew louder as the match went on.

as + clause: reason (as = because)

As gives a reason, usually at the beginning of a sentence; it sounds less strong than because.

'As' कारण बताता है, प्रायः वाक्य के आरंभ में; यह because से कम ज़ोरदार लगता है।

  • As it was raining, we stayed indoors.

as ... as (comparison) / the same as

Use as + adjective + as for equal degree, and the same as for identical things; do not mix them.

समान मात्रा के लिए 'as + adjective + as' और समान वस्तुओं के लिए 'the same as' का प्रयोग होता है; इन्हें मिलाइए नहीं।

  • Radhika is as tall as her brother.
  • My bag is the same as yours.

as + clause: manner / as soon as / as if

As also means in the way that, and it forms fixed expressions such as as soon as, as long as and as if, followed by present tense for the future.

'As' का अर्थ जिस तरह से भी है, और यह as soon as, as long as और as if जैसी निश्चित अभिव्यक्तियाँ बनाता है, जिनमें भविष्य के लिए present tense आता है।

  • Do as I told you.
  • I will call you as soon as I reach home.

!Common mistakes 2

✗ As soon as he will arrive, I will tell him.

✓ As soon as he arrives, I will tell him.

After as soon as, use the present tense for a future action, not will.

'As soon as' के बाद भविष्य की क्रिया के लिए present tense आता है, will नहीं।

✗ Her bag is same as mine.

✓ Her bag is the same as mine.

The phrase the same as needs the before same.

'The same as' में 'same' से पहले 'the' आता है।

≠Thesaurus: which synonym when

As and like both compare, but as can name a role and introduces a clause, while like is followed by a noun.

As और like दोनों तुलना करते हैं, पर 'as' भूमिका बता सकता है और clause लाता है, जबकि 'like' के बाद noun आता है।

as

Shows a real role, or introduces a clause of time, reason or manner.

वास्तविक भूमिका दिखाता है, या समय, कारण या ढंग का clause लाता है।

  • She worked as a nurse for ten years.

like

Means similar to, and is followed by a noun or pronoun, not a full clause.

इसका अर्थ के समान है, और इसके बाद noun या pronoun आता है, पूरा clause नहीं।

  • She sings like a nightingale.

since

As a reason word, since is more formal and often refers to a known reason.

कारण बताने वाले शब्द के रूप में since अधिक formal है और प्रायः ज्ञात कारण को दर्शाता है।

§Grammar and usage

'as ... as' for equal comparison ('as tall as'; negative 'not as' or 'not so ... as'); as (the role somebody has: 'She works as a nurse') and like (similar to: 'She sings like a bird'); as + clause in formal English ('Do as I say', not 'like I say'); 'as well as' (the verb agrees with the first subject: 'Radhika as well as her friends is coming'); 'such as' (for example), 'as if' and 'as though' (followed by were in formal English: 'He talks as if he were the boss').

यह बहुत पूछा जाता है: समान तुलना के लिए 'as ... as' ('as tall as'; नकारात्मक 'not as' या 'not so ... as'); as (किसी की भूमिका: 'She works as a nurse') और like (के समान: 'She sings like a bird'); औपचारिक English में as + clause ('Do as I say', 'like I say' नहीं); 'as well as' (verb पहले subject से मेल खाता है: 'Radhika as well as her friends is coming'); 'such as' (उदाहरण के लिए), 'as if' और 'as though' (औपचारिक English में बाद में were: 'He talks as if he were the boss')।
