In British English you live in a place permanently and stay somewhere temporarily: 'I live in Patna; I am staying with a friend in Delhi for the exam.' Indian English often uses stay for live ('Where do you stay?'), which examiners mark wrong; the correct question is 'Where do you live?' A legal stay is a court order halting action.
