§Structures (grammar patterns) 4

claim + to-infinitive

Use claim to + verb when somebody says something about himself or herself that may not be true.

जब कोई अपने बारे में ऐसी बात कहे जो सच न भी हो, तब 'claim to + verb' का प्रयोग होता है।

  • He claims to have scored full marks in English.
  • The company claims to be the oldest in the city.

claim + that-clause

A that-clause reports a statement that is not yet proved; the verb claim does not itself say the statement is true.

that-clause ऐसे कथन को बताता है जो अभी प्रमाणित नहीं है; 'claim' क्रिया स्वयं उसे सत्य नहीं ठहराती।

  • The witness claimed that she had seen the accident.

claim + sth (as a right / back)

Claim also means to ask for something that belongs to you by right, such as a refund, a prize or luggage.

'Claim' का अर्थ अपने अधिकार की किसी वस्तु को माँगना भी है, जैसे refund, पुरस्कार या सामान।

  • Passengers should claim their baggage at belt number three.
  • Nobody came forward to claim the lost wallet.

claim (noun) + for / on / to

As a noun, claim is followed by for (money), on (a person or property) or to (a right or title).

Noun के रूप में 'claim' के बाद धन के लिए for, व्यक्ति या संपत्ति के लिए on और अधिकार या उपाधि के लिए to आता है।

  • She made an insurance claim for the damaged car.
  • He has no claim on his brother's property.

!Common mistakes 3

✗ The man claimed himself to be a doctor.

✓ The man claimed to be a doctor.

Claim is followed directly by to + verb; a reflexive pronoun is not added (a Hindi-influenced structure).

'Claim' के बाद सीधे to + verb आता है; reflexive pronoun नहीं जोड़ा जाता (यह हिंदी के प्रभाव से बनी गलती है)।

✗ She claimed to me that she has finished the work yesterday.

✓ She claimed to me that she had finished the work the day before.

In reported speech after a past verb, the tense moves back and yesterday becomes the day before.

Past क्रिया के बाद reported speech में tense पीछे जाता है और 'yesterday' 'the day before' बन जाता है।

✗ The shopkeeper claimed me that the phone was new.

✓ The shopkeeper claimed that the phone was new.

Claim cannot take a personal object; say claimed that, or use told me.

'Claim' के बाद व्यक्ति object नहीं आता; 'claimed that' लिखें या 'told me' का प्रयोग करें।
